Theory test

The theory test comprises two parts: the question part and the hazard perception part. The theory test is taken on a computer. You must pass the theory test first before you can book the practical test.

What will I need to pass my theory test?
HMSO Book - The Highway Code
BSM Book - Theory test for car drivers
BSM Book - Practical test
Focus multimedia DVDROM - Driving test success all tests

How do I use the books?
Read the Highway Code first. After reading it, you can attempt the questions from either theory test for car drivers' book or the DVDROM. The remaining book practical test can be read a bit at a time to fit in with your lessons, e.g. if we're going to do pedestrian crossings in your next lesson, then you can read up about them before that lesson.

How do I use the questions part of the DVDROM?
Read the questions and answers carefully so that you don't miss any words. Words such as 'not' and 'don't' alter the meaning of a question. Look for key words in the question, which give you a clue to the correct answer. Remember, some questions require more than one answer. There are several sections. Do a test for each section and after doing this for all 14 sections you will know which ones you are good and bad at. Repeat the test again for the sections you are bad at and when you are good at all of the sections, you will be able to do a mock test. Click on the appropriate sections of your DVDROM to do a mock test.

How do I use the hazard perception part of the DVDROM?
You are tested on your ability to recognise and anticipate developing hazards. A developing hazard is one where you will have to take avoiding action, such as slowing down or steering. When you anticipate a developing hazard, press the mouse button without moving the mouse pointer on the screen towards the hazard. When the situation on screen develops, to the point where you know you are definitely going to have to slow down or change position, click again to ensure that you get some points on the test. On most of the video clips, to get 5 points you will have to click as soon as the hazard appears on the screen. Do not click at regular intervals trying to guess when the hazards crop up or you will score nothing for rhythmic clicking.

When will I be ready to take the test?
Follow the advice above for using the books and the DVDROM. When you can pass a mock test for both parts, use the useful links page on my website to book your theory test.
